If dates are unavailable, any sweet substance (like honey, but note: honey should not be given to infants under 1 year old due to botulism risk; a drop of sugar water or simply skipping this part is fine) can be used. This has both spiritual significance and a mild practical benefit of stimulating the baby’s sucking reflex.
