Run it through a good convolution reverb (like Convology XT, which is free) to place it in a space. Without reverb, it sounds like a cheap synth. With reverb, it becomes very playable for slow, emotional lines.

The Versilian Studios Chamber Orchestra 2 is a massive open-source library. While it’s known for ensemble sounds, the solo violin patch (violin_sus, violin_stac) is quite usable. You’ll need to load the SFZ files into a free player like (also free).
Free solo violins are not magic. They require more MIDI editing and processing than paid libraries. But with the right techniques and one of the VSTs above, you can absolutely write a convincing solo violin part for a song, trailer, or indie game.
