"They think our history is just a tragedy," she would tell the young guides at the Culion Museum and Archives. "But look at this letter from 1944. A man named Mateo wrote to his wife about the way the sunset looked through the jailhouse bars. He didn’t write about pain; he wrote about the sky. That is who we are."
