The JLPT N1 kanji list is not a list of 2,136 characters but a network of 1,110 advanced graphemes embedded in morphologically opaque compounds. Success at N1 correlates less with total kanji count and more with the ability to recognize Jukujikun, ateji, and graphic variants in authentic texts. We recommend that test-takers abandon isolated kanji apps at the N1 level and instead read 2–3 editorials daily, creating personal “irregular compound” banks. You will be asked to choose the correct Kanji based on the theme of the text (e.g., legal, economic, or literary). Many N1 Kanji look identical but have subtle differences in stroke order or radical placement that change their meaning entirely.
