The chart is divided by and age group (typically 5-year increments). It provides the minimum calories required for a "Satisfactory Medium" (passing) score, as well as higher thresholds for "Good," "Excellent," and "Outstanding."
To hit these numbers, you must understand the relationship between Watts and Calories. On the approved LifeFitness stationary bikes used by the Navy, your caloric burn is a direct result of your power output.
The test is simple but specific:
| Score Category | Calories Required (12 min) | |----------------|----------------------------| | Outstanding High | 175+ | | Excellent Medium | 155–174 | | Good Medium | 135–154 | | Satisfactory Medium | 115–134 | | Probationary | 105–114 | | Failing | <105 |
You cannot use "total calories" (which includes resting metabolism). The bike must be set to display "Cals" (exercise calories only), usually verified by resetting the readout immediately before starting.
The Navy PRT bike calories chart transforms a stationary bike workout into a standardized fitness assessment. By understanding the calorie thresholds for your age and gender, training specifically for a 12-minute maximal effort, and mastering the interaction between resistance and cadence, you can achieve a passing—or even outstanding—score without ever lacing up running shoes.
