On the micro-level, the season creates tension through character-specific storylines. Piper Chapman (Taylor Schilling) continues her descent from naive WASP to calculating opportunist, launching a used-underwear business that exploits her fellow inmates. Meanwhile, the "Golden Girls" (the older inmates) become an unexpected comedic highlight with their antics involving a discarded beach ball they name "Baywatch."
The real emotional gut-punch came not from the pool, but from the backstory of a woman named Norma. On screen, the mute inmate who barely said two words in real life was shown as a young woman who had pushed a cult-leader husband off a cliff. The women in the bunk fell silent.
