Luffy storms off and finds a small chest, eating the Gomu Gomu no Mi (Gum-Gum Fruit) inside. Shanks discovers him and identifies the fruit as a Devil Fruit, revealing that Luffy will never be able to swim again. To demonstrate, Shanks tosses Luffy into a small barrel of water, where Luffy sinks like a stone.
Later, Higuma returns to the bar demanding sake. When Makino tells him they are out, Higuma breaks a bottle and threatens her. Shanks intervenes, but instead of fighting immediately, he apologizes for the mess. Higuma pours sake on Shanks and leaves, calling him a coward.
