This wasn't for movies or music. It was a high-stakes cybersecurity collective where members shared OTR (Off-the-Record) encrypted messages and debated the ethics of the darknet. For years, the admins were considered untouchable, hiding behind the anonymous routing of Tor.

It had a clean design, an active comment section that verified file quality, and a dedicated user base. At its peak, it was estimated to be the 69th most popular website on the entire internet, serving millions of unique visitors every day.

However, the "golden age" was short-lived. In July 2016, the U.S. government seized the main domains and arrested the site’s alleged founder, Artem Vaulin, in Poland.

In July 2016, the trap was sprung. Vaulin was arrested in Poland. The U.S. government seized the domain names, and KAT went dark. The message on the screen was simple and final: The website had been seized by the Department of Homeland Security.
