Before Visual Studio 2013 and 2015, the landscape was different. You had the paid "Professional" and "Enterprise" versions, and you had the free "Express" versions. The Express editions were frustratingly stripped down—you couldn't use plugins, and they often lacked essential advanced debugging tools.
