Janine fed a sheet into the tray. She pressed the green button.

“Girl, that machine is older than Gregory’s crush on me,” Ava said, zooming in on Janine’s panicked face. “Just hit it. That’s what they do in the movies.”

: The teachers deal with the complexities of extracurricular activities.

“It’s a work in progress,” Janine said, feeling a flush of pride. “Just like the school, right?”

Barbara sipped her tea. “You have to lift the lid, pull the cartridge out, and blow on it. And you have to tell the machine you aren’t afraid of it. Show dominance.”

Janine watched Barbara walk away, a vision of serenity. Why couldn't she be that calm? Why couldn't she just use the chalkboard?
