Why do millions recite this Gatha?

"Vandāmi bodhipādapaṃ, ihaṭṭhitaṃ naruttamaṃ – I venerate the Bodhi tree, standing here as the Supreme among men."

"Ime ete mahabodhi lokanathena pujita ahampi te namassami bodhi raja namatthu te."

Another central verse specifically regarding the tree states:

While the power of the Gatha is traditionally attributed to the sacred sounds of Pali, the meaning carries profound weight. A popular verse often translated from the Bodhi Puja Gatha reads:

Asevanā ca balānaṃ, paṇḍitānañca sevanā; Pūjā ca pūjanīyānaṃ, etaṃ maṅgalamuttamaṃ.

The most common Pali stanza recited during the puja is as follows:

A complete Bodhi Puja typically involves physical offerings accompanied by specific verbal chants:

"Araham Sammā-Sambuddho..." (The Blessed One is an Arahant, perfectly enlightened, endowed with knowledge and conduct...) This recitation helps the practitioner internalize the virtues they aspire to cultivate within themselves.

A central theme of the Gatha is the victory over Māra (the embodiment of desire, death, and distraction). The verses recall how the Buddha called the Earth to witness his right to attain Enlightenment—a moment famously depicted in Buddhist art with the Buddha touching the ground with his right hand (the Bhūmisparsha Mudrā ).

"Yassa mūle nisinnova, sabbaññutaṃ papunī sayaṃ – Vandāmi bodhipādapaṃ, tamahaṃ sirasā ahaṃ."
