| Step | Tips | |------|------| | | Check the 17‑digit VIN against Škoda’s database to confirm the “Red XX” package (look for code X2R in the body‑type section). | | 2️⃣ Confirm colour | The paint should be a deep metallic red with a subtle “flop” (angle‑dependent change). Under direct sunlight it should show a faint violet‑blue shimmer. | | 3️⃣ Inspect the exclusive badges | Badges are located on the bonnet, rear trunk lid, wheel centre caps, and interior door sills. They should be crisp, not faded. | | 4️⃣ Test the sport suspension | Drive over a speed bump: the car should feel firm but not harsh. Listen for any knocking from the rear suspension. | | 5️⃣ Evaluate the infotainment | Make sure the 13‑inch screen boots up quickly, and that Android Auto/Apple CarPlay pair without glitches. | | 6️⃣ Check the engine code | TSI (engine code CZB ) or TDI (engine code CBD ) – confirm you are getting the powertrain you want. | | 7️⃣ Review the warranty | Red XX models usually carry the standard 3‑year/60 000‑mile warranty, but many dealers offer an extra 2‑year “Performance” extension. | | 8️⃣ Look for optional extras | Some owners add the “Sound Red” premium audio or the “4‑x4” drivetrain; ensure these are documented in the build sheet. | | | Instrument cluster | Red‑accented digital display

“this is alas just another film that panders to the image Thompson himself tried to shirk – the reckless buffoon that is more at home on fraternity posters than library shelves. It is a missed opportunity to take the man seriously.”

This is an excellent summary on the attitude of the seeming majority of HST ‘admirers’.
It just makes me think that they read Fear and Loathing, looked up similar stories of HST’s unhinged behaviour and didn’t bother with the rest of his work.

There is such a raw, human element of Thompsons work, showing an amazing mind, sense of humour, critical thinking and an uncanny ability to have his finger on the pulse of many issues of his time.
Booze feature prominently in most of his writing and he is always flirting with ‘the edge’, but this obsession with remembering him more as Raoul Duke and less as Hunter Thompson, is a sad reflection of most ‘fans’; even if it was a self inflicted wound by Thompson himself.
